A TOUCH OF CLASS---Original Air Date: 19 September 1975
Basil is delighted when a member of the aristocracy chooses to stay at the Fawlty Towers, snubbing the normal guests who frequent the hotel. What Basil does not know, however, is that the man is not a Lord but a confidence trickster who attempts to steal his collection of rare coins. As Basil's desperation to keep such an 'upstanding' guest increases, he becomes increasingly tolerant towards the man's behavior, only to have the guest arrested in a police raid on the hotel.

THE BUILDERS---Original Air Date: 26 September 1975
When some work is required on the hotel lobby, Basil goes for the cheapest quote - an Irish builder by the name of O'Reilly - the moment his wife is out of the way. O'Reilly and his workers make a mess of the job, fitting doors where they shouldn't be and putting in walls where there were supposed to be doors. As a result, Sybil is forced to call in a proper builder, only to suffer embarrassment when O'Reilly returns to fix the mess he made. However, she soon realizes that thanks to the work of O'Reilly and his men, the hotel is no longer structurally sound.

Mrs. Richards might just be the one person in Torquay who is cheaper than Basil; she refuses to turn on her hearing aid, as it wears down the batteries. The fact that she can't hear a word that anyone is saying is only an inconvenience for other people, not her. Basil is having some hearing problems as well: he doesn't want Sybil to hear about his betting, and winning, on a horse race. Sybil sees him with the money; Mrs. Richards claims to have lost some money, and it looks like Basil is going to have to turn his winnings over to her in order to stay out of trouble with Sybil.

When two doctors register for rooms at Fawlty Towers, Basil is delighted. Soon thereafter, Basil discovers that one is a psychiatrist. Basil is terrified of what the psychiatrist might think of him. The doctor has no interest in analyzing Basil; he merely wants to enjoy his stay at the hotel. Meanwhile, a handsome young playboy has checked into one of the "single" rooms, and Basil is determined to prove that the man has a lady visitor. Another visitor to the hotel is an attractive young single woman. Basil manages to make a fool of himself while trying to avoid what he believes to be the psychiatrist's scrutiny.

Some American guests give Fawlty Towers an international flair, but their demands for American food, including a Waldorf Salad, leave Basil wishing that they'd stayed on their side of the Atlantic. An attempt to get Terry the chef to stay and cook for them falls through, and Basil has to try to make dinner for the loudly complaining Americans. The other guests, seeing that the Americans are getting results, begin complaining as well, until Basil gives them all an ultimatum.

BASIL THE RAT---Original Air Date: 25 October 1979
Manuel has a pet: a Siberian Hamster; Basil, however, believes that the pet is not a hamster, but a rat, and orders Manuel to get rid of it before someone sees it... someone like the hotel inspectors who are coming around. Manuel loves his hamster though, and can't bear to lose it; unfortunately, this is exactly what he does. The hamster is loose in the hotel, and both Polly and Manuel rush to find him before either Basil or the hotel inspector sees it.
